A new plate tectonic model for the distribution of major earthquake sources in the greater Kanto area, from Toda & Stein
(in prep.). Depth contours are based on 1994-2004 NIED seismicity; plate boundaries are from bathymetric analysis.
Key features are the very limited extent of the Philippine Sea plate (pink) beneath the Eurasian plate, and the presence of
the remnant block (green) between the overlying Eurasian plate and the subducting Pacific plate below (contours not shown).
